Can drinking beer be sophisticated?
Have you ever been to a social gathering or party and been made to feel somewhat inferior as you would rather prefer a beer to a glass of wine?
This has happened to me a few times and I’ve always wondered why I should be made to feel second rate by those pretentious wine buffs.
Beer does have a reputation as the poor mans drink, the drink of the lower classes, the uncouth and commonner, but is this reputation rightly deserved?
Well yes mainly it is, lets be honest alot of the alcohol related violence and criminal activity is more than likely fueled by the amber liquid and not a chardonay or pinot noir.
Major beer companies market their mass produced beer products at the young frat boys or lager lout, you know the types that are usually up to no good, so obviously there is a huge market for it.
Also I haven’t heard of a wine bong before, I can’t see it catching on at college frat parties anytime soon!
So yes so alot of beer drinkers do enforce the stereotype.
However I feel that more and more beer drinkers, myself included, as they age and mature out of this phase instead of taking to wine drinking to portray a sense a sophistication are exploring brewpubs, craft beers, boutiques and micro breweries with all their variety and nuances.
So while beer will always have an uncouth element associated with it, it does now have a sophisticated side to it as well.
